Alex Hooper
Head of Climate and Energy at Oxford Economics
Speaker

Profile

A macroeconomist with more than a decade of experience in economic forecasting, policy analysis, and strategic advisory, Alex currently leads Oxford Economics Australia’s Climate & Energy Economics practice. Her work focuses on the intersection of the energy transition, infrastructure investment, and long-term economic resilience, with a particular emphasis on the rapidly growing data centre sector and its economic implications.

Alex has led major projects examining data centre electricity demand, phantom demand risks, and the role of AI in unlocking grid and water capacity, including advisory work for Amazon Web Services and presentations to ASEAN energy regulators. She has directed modelling for AEMO’s Integrated System Plan, analysing the impact of data centres on peak demand and energy consumption under alternative macroeconomic and climate scenarios.

Her broader energy and infrastructure experience includes modelling renewable transition pathways, estimating the cost of capital for Australia’s energy transition, and assessing infrastructure delivery constraints across hundreds of energy projects. Alex regularly advises governments, regulators, and major institutions on climate risk, energy policy, and the economic opportunities emerging from the global transition to net zero.
